Step 1:
Developing disaggregated data practices across all functions in the organization.
Questions to consider:
- At what points in the year would it make the most sense for us to disaggregate and review our data?
- Does our organization or school engage in data-driven decision making?
- Who needs to be involved in the culture shift that is necessary to ensure regular, disaggregated data analysis occurs?
Actions to consider:
- Establish regular review of data collection and disaggregation practices to identify any demographic trends. (1)
- Establish a process that supports data-driven decision making. This process should include: collecting data, analyzing data, reporting data, using data for organizational/school improvement, communicating through data. (2)
- Review your DEI goals and define the data processes needed to track progress. (3)
Step 2:
Consistent funding is put towards this work, and a recurring budget line item is dedicated to racial equity, diversity & inclusion priorities.
Questions to consider:
- What do we know about our current annual budget process?
- What funders in our region (or nationally) are currently supporting DEI and racial equity work?
- What accountability measures are needed to ensure that DEI is consistently funded at our organization or school?
- Who from our senior leadership team should be involved in this budgeting process? Think about who is dedicated to this work and has influence in the C-suite.
Actions to consider:
- Draft a budget to support your DEI priorities. (1, 2, 4)
- Craft a presentation to share the draft budget for DEI priorities to senior leadership. (1, 2)
- Build a database of funders who support this work in your region.
- Meet with peers who are engaging in this work and ask them how they allocate funds or secure grants for DEI. (4, 5, 6, 7)
- Allocate stipends to staff who choose to lead internal DEI sessions or committees. (3)
